Conductors

Student conductors have multiple opportunities for developing orchestral conducting knowledge.

Dr. Eric Hinton teaches orchestral and band conducting in the second-semester instrumental conducting course. Professor Jordan Randall Smith teaches private orchestral conducting lessons as a course and provides individual coaching sessions to interested students.

SU Strings has two paid Assistant Conductor positions for students to gain rehearsal and performance experience. In addition, the Susquehanna University Symphony Orchestra provides lab opportunities for podium experience in the form of mini-workshops.

Each spring, the Training Ensemble provides weekly opportunities for Juniors to develop both physical conducting and rehearsal skills.

Composers

Each semester, composition majors and orchestration class members have opportunities to collaborate with SUSO. Dr. Patrick Long and Professor Jordan Randall Smith collaborate directly with students for real-world experience composing and arranging music for orchestral musicians.

Student composers may also seek employment as a SUSO Staff Arranger. Students compositions occasionally receive concert performances by SUSO.
